Lamtang Elementary School Hosts Pot Gardening Activity Led by BEED Students

La Trinidad, Benguet, May 18, 2023 – Lamtang Elementary School was abuzz with green thumbs and youthful enthusiasm as 13 Bachelor in Elementary Education (BEED) students from the University spearheaded the MAPS-PG (Moveable, Affordable, Practical, Sustainable – Pot Gardening) community extension activity. This event, aligned with the university’s Project A.G.S.H.A.N. (Achieving Literacy Goals through Service, Help, and Awareness in the Neighborhood), aimed to impart essential gardening skills to 42 elementary students from Grades 4 to 6.

The day-long event, held on May 18, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, provided a hands-on experience for the Lamtang Elementary School students. Under the guidance of the BEED students, the participants learned about the practical aspects of pot gardening, focusing on the MAPS-PG approach to make gardening moveable, affordable, practical, and sustainable.

The MAPS-PG activity not only enhanced the students’ knowledge of gardening but also fostered a sense of environmental responsibility anchored on Sustainable Development Goals #15 which is environmental conservation. The Lamtang Elementary School courtyard was transformed into a vibrant hub of learning, with students actively engaging in planting and nurturing their potted greens. The community extension program concluded with a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie, symbolized by the shared enjoyment of snacks. The BEED students provided nourishing refreshments to all participants, fostering a positive and convivial atmosphere to mark the end of the event.

Lamtang Elementary School expressed gratitude for the meaningful contribution of the university’s BEED students, noting the positive impact of the MAPS-PG activity on both the students’ gardening skills and their awareness of sustainable practices. This collaborative effort exemplifies the university’s commitment to community engagement and the holistic development of future educators.
