In a defining moment of academic partnership, Baguio Central University (BCU) joined the University of Baguio (UB) in co-hosting the 3rd Regional Student Research Colloquium on October 15, 2025, held at the UB Centennial Hall. Anchored on the theme “Meaningful Collaboration through Research,” the event celebrated the growing research culture among higher education institutions across the Cordillera region, fostering a spirit of shared learning, innovation, and scholarly pursuit.
The program opened with an inspiring message from Dr. Javier Herminio D. Bautista, President of the University of Baguio, who encouraged participants to embrace research as a courageous journey of discovery and impact. Esteemed plenary speakers Dr. Mark Preston S. Lopez and Dr. Janet Lynn M. Balagtey enriched the colloquium with thought-provoking discussions on research innovation and ethics—setting the tone for a day filled with intellectual engagement and collaborative energy.
Participating universities included Kalinga State University (KSU), Easter College Inc., Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC), University of Baguio (UB), and Baguio Central University (BCU). The research presentations were grouped into five academic clusters representing diverse disciplines: Business and Criminology, Engineering and Technology, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, and Graduate Studies—underscoring the multidimensional nature of research excellence in the Cordilleras.
Baguio Central University proudly showcased notable research contributions:
- Mr. Jeriel C. Coltiyen presented his paper “Innovative Practices of the Silungan Center in Managing Children at Risk in Baguio City,” offering critical insights into local child welfare interventions.
- Mr. Daniel B. Padilan Jr. exhibited his research poster “Exploration of Buy Now, Pay Later Usage in Online Shopping Platforms: An Analysis of Pure Compensation Earners,” analyzing consumer behavior in digital financial ecosystems; and
- Mr. Terrance Darryl Bryan G. Marquez presented “Financial Awareness of Non-BSBA Students of Baguio Central University,” emphasizing the need to strengthen financial literacy among non-business students.
BCU’s presence extended beyond participation—Dr. Michael T. Sebullen, Director for Research, and Engr. Lorelie S. Malit, Non-Teaching Research Coordinator, both served as panel evaluators, providing expert feedback and mentoring to the student researchers. Meanwhile, Ms. Rowena B. Gagno, Research Coordinator of the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE), served as coach and mentor for BCU’s CCJE entry and accompanied the student presenters during the event, symbolizing the university’s hands-on approach in nurturing research excellence.
Throughout the day, student researchers presented their studies before evaluators composed of faculty researchers and experts in their respective fields. The sessions highlighted the increasing commitment of Cordillera HEIs to advance education, policy, and social innovation through collaborative research.
As a co-host institution, Baguio Central University reaffirmed its strong alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)—by empowering student researchers to create meaningful, socially responsive, and innovative work.
The 3rd Regional Student Research Colloquium stands as a reckoning of BCU’s evolving role as a key driver of research collaboration in Northern Luzon—an embodiment of its mission to inspire, engage, and transform communities through education, scholarship, and partnership.
