Research Meets Action: Strengthening the Nexus of Research and Extension Through the Pocket Research Learning Program

By the Research and Development Center | October 14, 2025

The Pocket Research Learning Program, held on October 14, 2025, brought together over 30 faculty members, extension and research coordinators in a dynamic afternoon of learning and reflection. Hosted by Mr. Angelo A. Bayacsan (CHTM Extension Coordinator) the session exemplified Baguio Central University’s steadfast commitment to bridging academic inquiry and social transformation—where research creates knowledge and extension applies it for tangible impact.

The Nexus of Knowledge and Empowerment

The heart of the program pulsed with the wisdom and experience of Dr. Marilou M. Saong, a distinguished faculty researcher and former Director for Extension and Community Outreach at University of Baguio. In her lecture, “Strengthening the Nexus of Research and Extension,” Dr. Saong painted a compelling picture of how universities can transform scholarship into sustainable community empowerment.

Her presentation introduced five models of the Research–Extension Nexus—the Linear, Feedback, Participatory, Integrated, and Translational models—each illustrating how research outcomes evolve into actionable community programs. Through case studies ranging from environmental health projects in Baguio City to collaborative reading interventions with public schools, she underscored that “true innovation happens when communities co-create solutions, not merely receive them.

Bridging Theory and Practice

Dr. Saong emphasized that every research endeavor must be linked to real-world application. Her insights resonated with BCU’s own mission of building a research-engaged and socially responsive university. She shared practical strategies to translate research findings into extension programs—such as health awareness campaigns, participatory training modules, and localized policy advocacy. The lecture was followed by an open forum, synthesis, and awarding certificates led by BCU research leaders. Attendees praised the event for deepening their understanding of how extension work can be informed and strengthened by evidence-based research. The program culminated with a sense of shared purpose—affirming BCU’s direction under the Research and Development Center (RDC) to integrate research outcomes into meaningful community partnerships, advancing both institutional growth and national development goals.

As Dr. Saong aptly concluded, echoing the words of Kurt Lewin, “No research without action, no action without research.” The Pocket Research Learning Program stands as a testament to that principle—where academic rigor meets civic responsibility, and where research truly serves the people, it was meant for.
