Benguet, Philippines — On August 23, 24, and 25, 2024, the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) at Baguio Central University took a significant step toward advancing the quality of its criminology program by participating in a Forensic Science Certification Training Course. The training, held at Paulino’s Café in Lamtang, La Trinidad, Benguet, was held for three days of intensive learning and skill enhancement. It brought together law enforcers, forensic practitioners, criminology deans, instructors and students, from different universities all over the Philippines.
The participants included Mr. Ernesto B. Bucalan, Jr., Mrs. Beca May Pidlao-Palitayan, Mrs. Rowena B. Gagno, and Ms. Princess Joy B. Moyaen, all of whom are key faculty members of the BCU-CCJE. The certification course provided them with advanced skills and knowledge in forensic science, enabling them to conduct more precise and effective forensic analyses—an essential component of criminology education.
Advancing Education through Professional Development
The training is part of Baguio Central University’s ongoing commitment to “Excellence in Education and Continuing Development.” By aligning with these institutional objectives, the certification course not only enhances the professional growth of the instructors but also significantly impacts the quality of education provided to criminology students.
“Criminology is a dynamic and ever-evolving field,” remarked Mr. Ernesto B. Bucalan, Jr. “To stay ahead in our field, we have to keep learning and growing. This training has given us valuable new tools and techniques in forensic science, and we’re excited to bring these into our classrooms. Our students will gain so much from this, and it’s really rewarding to know we can offer them an even better education.”
Benefits to Students and the Broader Educational Community
The certification course’s advantages extend well beyond the immediate professional development of the instructors. By enhancing their expertise, the instructors are now better prepared to deliver up-to-date and comprehensive instruction in forensic science and investigative techniques. This development ensures that CCJE students are exposed to the latest practices and tools in criminology, providing them with a deeper understanding of the complexities of the field and preparing them for real-world challenges.
Students will particularly benefit from more accurate simulations, case studies, and hands-on exercises, all of which are critical for developing the critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills necessary for success in criminology and related fields. This enriched learning experience is expected to boost student readiness for board exams and future careers in law enforcement, forensic science, and beyond.
Contributing to Global Educational Standards
This initiative is also in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, which emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all. By investing in the professional development of its instructors, Baguio Central University is contributing to this global objective, ensuring that its students receive the highest standard of education possible.
As the CCJE continues to elevate its educational offerings, the impact of this training will be felt not only within the university but also across the broader criminal justice and law enforcement community. The certification course marks a significant milestone in the university’s efforts to produce highly skilled and competent graduates, ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
