Demonstrating its steadfast commitment to community engagement and public health service, Baguio Central University (BCU) – College of Nursing and School of Midwifery successfully conducted a Free Circumcision Program in Barangay Virac, Itogon, Benguet. The outreach activity served a total of 63 male child beneficiaries, providing them with safe, accessible, and essential surgical care within their community.
The initiative aimed not only to deliver free medical services but also to promote proper hygiene, prevent potential health complications, and improve the overall well-being of young beneficiaries. Circumcision, a significant health and cultural practice in many Filipino communities, was carried out by competent healthcare professionals under strict adherence to safety and clinical standards.
This meaningful endeavor was made possible through the strong partnership with the Drugstore Association of the Philippines, led by Ma’am Marcela Siano, and the Municipal Health Office of Itogon, under the leadership of Dr. Oliver P. Guadana and Dra. Marie Jorelyn Bahingawan. Their collaboration ensured the efficient delivery of services, availability of medical supplies, and proper coordination throughout the activity.
The success of the program was further strengthened by the invaluable support of the Local Government Unit of Itogon, headed by Mayor Bernard Waclin, and Barangay Virac, led by Hon. Nestor Martillano. Their assistance in mobilizing the community and facilitating logistical needs played a crucial role in the smooth implementation of the mission.
Equally significant was the guidance and leadership of the BCU Administration, headed by Dr. Margarita Cecilda Rillera, whose vision continues to inspire meaningful outreach initiatives. The College Dean, Dr. Gina L. Casi, and Clinical Coordinator, Ma’am Imelda B. Manuel, also provided unwavering support and direction, ensuring that the activity aligned with academic and professional standards.
The Student Government Organization (SGO) likewise played a vital role in the success of the mission. With the guidance of SGO Advisers Sir Allan P. Guinanghan and Ma’am Ailen Rafael, and under the leadership of SGO Officers headed by Angelica Samson, the team demonstrated strong coordination, leadership, and commitment in organizing and executing the activity.
Faculty members, including Sir Eduardo Lofstedt, Ma’am Florence Dao-ayen, Ma’am Jedralyn Dunuan, Ma’am Arlene Pal-a, and Ma’am Lancy Bomogao, rendered their expertise and supervision throughout the program. Their dedication ensured that all procedures were conducted efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety. In addition, the active participation of student nurses and midwifery students provided them with valuable hands-on experience, further enhancing their clinical competence, confidence, and sense of social responsibility.
The institution also extends its sincere appreciation to the supportive BCU Alumni, Ma’am Jessica Medino and Sir Klein Buswilan, whose continued involvement reflects the enduring spirit of service instilled by the university. Special recognition is likewise given to the generous donor, Ma’am Venus Gay-as, whose contribution significantly supported the realization of this outreach activity.
Beyond the immediate provision of healthcare services, the medical mission served as a platform for fostering compassion, collaboration, and community empowerment.
It highlighted the importance of bringing healthcare closer to those in need, particularly in geographically challenged areas where access to medical services may be limited.
Through this initiative, Baguio Central University once again demonstrated its dedication to producing not only competent healthcare Event briefing led by Dra. Marie Jorelyn Bahingawan professionals but also individuals who embody empathy, integrity, and a genuine commitment to service. As the institution continues to expand its outreach efforts, it remains guided by its mission to uplift communities and create lasting positive impact—truly making a difference, one life at a time.
