In the ever-evolving landscape of hospitality and tourism, understanding the operational dynamics of establishments is crucial for students aspiring to excel in the industry. One effective approach to learning is through experiential activities, such as industry visits, which provide firsthand insight into real-world practices. With SDG 17 Partnership for Goals the students embarked on an enlightening industry visit at Cosmic Farm, an innovative hospitality and tourism establishment that emphasizes sustainable farming and rural tourism.

The objectives of the experiential learning activity are to achieve several key that objectives centered around ergonomic principles and worker safety. In line with the SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth which to understand ergonomic principles applicable to hospitality settings. For the student to identify ergonomic risks faced by hospitality workers.  To apply ergonomic solutions to improve worker safety and efficiency.  And students must develop awareness of proper ergonomics practices among hospitality staff.

During the visit, students observed various operational aspects of Cosmic Farm, from guest interactions to farm management activities. One of the primary focuses was on ergonomics the science of designing workspaces and tasks to fit the worker, thereby reducing physical strain and increasing productivity.

Students learned how ergonomic principles are integrated into the design of workstations, tools, and daily routines to promote safety and comfort. With SDG 3 Good Health and Well-Being the students also learn proper process and how to grow natural plants and vegetables within our own houses by the proper seedlings and organic fertilizers.

The students engaged in discussions with Cosmic Farm manager about common ergonomic risks faced in their daily tasks. These included musculoskeletal strain from manual labor, improper lifting techniques, and prolonged standing during guest interactions. The students also were introduced with some ergonomic tools, and redesigning workspaces can reduce injury rates and increase productivity, ultimately benefiting both staff and guests that goes with SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth.

The significant outcome of the visit was to develop an awareness among students regarding proper ergonomic practices and an innovative workplace for our local farmers which also under the SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.  They learned the importance of training staff on ergonomics, implementing safety protocols, and fostering a culture of health and safety within hospitality establishments.

By understanding these concepts firsthand, students are better prepared to contribute to workplace safety in their future careers. The experience underscored that effective ergonomics is vital in creating sustainable and worker-friendly hospitality environments.

The industry visit to Cosmic Farm provided invaluable experiential learning, bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application. It highlighted the importance of ergonomic principles in ensuring the safety, comfort, and efficiency of hospitality workers. As the industry continues to grow and adapt, integrating ergonomic practices will remain essential for fostering healthy and productive work environments. This visit not only enriched students’ understanding but also equipped them with the skills to advocate for safer, more efficient hospitality operations in their professional journeys.
