Baguio Central University College of Nursing and School of Midwifery, is conducting a first aid training program for basic education teachers from various schools in Delles, Burgos, La Union. The initiative aims to strengthen participants’ knowledge of basic first aid and improve their preparedness to respond to medical emergencies in school settings. This activity reflects the university’s commitment to community engagement, health education, and the application of professional knowledge to address local community needs.
The training is facilitated by Ms. Florence Daoayen, MAN, Ms. Jedralyn Pangod Dunuan, MNE, Ms. Michelle Kiyawan, MNE, Ms. Arlene Pal-a, MNE, and Mr. Allan Guinanghan, the college’s community extension coordinator. They are joined by third-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN III) students, led by Ms. Angelica Castillo Erguiza, and Student Government Organization (SGO) officers, led by Ms. Angelica Samson. Through their collective participation, faculty members, nursing students, and student leaders contribute to the dissemination of health knowledge and the promotion of emergency preparedness among educators. The initiative also provides nursing students with opportunities to participate in community-oriented activities that reinforce the importance of service, collaboration, and professional responsibility.
In addition to the first aid training, the BCU College of Nursing and School of Midwifery Student Government Organization has organized a medical mission scheduled for the following day in Linuan, Burgos, La Union. The planned activity is expected to involve volunteer students, faculty members, and SGO officers. This initiative extends the university’s community service efforts by creating an opportunity to provide health-related assistance to residents. BCU expresses its sincere appreciation to Hon. Mayor Delfin C. Comides Jr. and his staff for allowing the university to conduct the first aid training in Delles and the medical mission in Linuan, Burgos, La Union. Their cooperation supports the implementation of university-led community activities and strengthens collaboration between the academic institution and local government.
These initiatives demonstrate BCU’s commitment to community extension and social responsibility through health education, student involvement, and community partnerships. The ongoing first aid training represents a concrete activity in promoting emergency preparedness, while the medical mission remains a planned initiative whose services and outcomes should be documented after its completion. Recording the number of participants, beneficiaries, and services delivered will help establish the activities’ reach and measurable contributions to the community.
The activities are aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being is the most directly relevant because the first aid training and planned medical mission promote health awareness, emergency preparedness, and access to health-related services. SDG 4: Quality Education is supported through the sharing of practical first aid knowledge with basic education teachers and the involvement of nursing students in experiential learning. SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals is reflected in the collaboration among BCU faculty members, nursing students, SGO officers, educators, and the local government. SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities is also relevant because strengthening first aid knowledge can contribute to safer and more prepared school and community environments.
Through these community extension initiatives, Baguio Central University continues to demonstrate the value of higher education institutions in promoting public health, developing socially responsible students, and building partnerships that support community well-being and sustainable development.
