BCU HOLDS SUICIDE PREVENTION SEMINAR TO PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND STUDENT SUPPORT

Baguio Central University (BCU), through its Supreme Student Council (SSC) in collaboration with the Guidance Services Office, conducted a Suicide Prevention Month Seminar on September 25, 2026, at the Dr. MJF Function Hall. With the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide: Start the Conversation,” the seminar aimed to raise mental health awareness and encourage supportive conversations about suicide prevention.

The seminar brought together student representatives from the College of Teacher and Liberal Arts (CTELA), College of Business Administration (CBA), College of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM), College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE), and College of Nursing and School of Midwifery (CONSM).

Ma’am Jessabel Estrera, Family Development Focal Person of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program under DSWD CAR, discussed “Navigating One’s Life with a Positive Mindset,” highlighting the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and developing healthy ways to navigate life’s challenges.

Dr. Liza Ngiao, Guidance Services Specialist at the University of the Philippines Baguio, presented “Speak Up, Life Matters.” Her discussion encouraged participants to speak up, reach out for support, and recognize the importance of being present for people experiencing difficulties.

The seminar also included reflection activities that encouraged participants to consider their personal commitments to mental health promotion and suicide prevention.

The seminar provided student representatives with opportunities to learn about mental health, reflect on suicide prevention, and recognize their role in fostering safe and supportive spaces within the university community.

The activity emphasized that creating a caring campus environment requires collective effort. Any follow-up activities or continuing initiatives should be confirmed with the Supreme Student Council and the Guidance Services Office before publication.

The seminar supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being by promoting mental health awareness, encouraging help-seeking, and strengthening understanding of suicide prevention and peer support.
