Developing a strong foundation in research is an essential step in preparing students to become critical thinkers and future professionals. In support of this goal, Baguio Central University (BCU) conducted an orientation seminar for Level 3 students enrolled in Research 1 on September 20, 2025, at WEMS Hall, Padre Burgos Campus, Carrying the theme, “Bridging Learning and Practice Through Research: Nurturing Critical Thinkers and Change Makers,” the seminar aimed to guide students in understanding the value of research in connecting academic knowledge with practical applications.

The orientation was led by University Research Director Dr. Michael T. Sebullen, together with the college’s Research Coordinator, Mr. Hilario A. Sanglay. The session introduced students to the importance of research as a systematic process of inquiry, analysis, and knowledge development. It also emphasized the role of research in strengthening critical thinking, encouraging evidence-based decision-making, and identifying solutions to relevant issues. Through the guidance of the university’s research leadership and the college’s research coordinator, students were oriented toward the expectations and responsibilities involved in their Research 1 course.

The seminar provided Level 3 students with an opportunity to better understand the purpose of academic research and its relevance to their educational and professional development. By emphasizing the connection between theoretical learning and practical application, the activity encouraged students to approach research with curiosity, discipline, and a commitment to responsible inquiry. The orientation also established a foundation for their engagement in research-related coursework, where they can further develop their skills in identifying problems, evaluating information, and formulating evidence-based conclusions.

The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, as it supports the development of critical thinking, research competencies, and lifelong learning among students. It also contributes to SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by encouraging research and the generation of knowledge that may inform innovation and practical solutions to societal challenges.

Through the Research 1 orientation seminar, BCU reaffirmed the importance of integrating research into student learning and professional preparation. By guiding Level 3 students toward responsible inquiry and evidence-based thinking, the university continues to encourage the development of future professionals who can apply their knowledge, address emerging challenges, and contribute meaningfully to their respective fields.
