A three-day Training-Workshop on Ethics Review for Academic Research concluded on September 10, 2025, at The VIP Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City, gathering faculty and researchers from higher education institutions nationwide. The event emphasized the growing urgency of reinforcing ethical standards in academic research, especially with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for scholarly integrity.

With discussions centered on accountability, responsible data use, and the evaluation of AI-driven research outputs, participants explored how ethical frameworks must evolve in step with technological advancements. These conversations reflected the shared commitment of academic institutions to maintain the credibility and societal relevance of research in an increasingly digital and automated world.

Renowned academic leader Engr. Renan P. Limjuco, PhD, served as the resource speaker, offering practical insights and methodologies that strengthen the capacity of institutions to conduct and evaluate research ethically.
Representing the Cordillera Administrative Region, Baguio Central University (BCU) joined alongside Mountain Province State University. BCU’s delegation, Dr. Michael T. Sebullen, Director for Research; Dr. Cherrie Mae M. Manuel, Dean of the College of Business Administration (CBA); and Dr. Jocelyn B. Ang, Dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management, underscored the university’s dedication to promoting a research culture rooted in ethical responsibility.

For the College of Business Administration, the workshop aligns strongly with its mission of nurturing responsible and globally competent business leaders. Ethical research practices directly support SDG 4: Quality Education, by ensuring that academic outputs are credible, relevant, and grounded in integrity; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by encouraging the ethical use of emerging technologies such as AI in business research and development; and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, through the promotion of transparency, accountability, and ethical decision-making in academic and professional environments.

The training also holds strategic importance for PACUCOA accreditation, strengthening the college’s and university’s overall research framework and aligning institutional practices with national and international quality assurance standards.

Ultimately, the workshop served as a venue for collaboration, reflection, and the continuous improvement of research ethics in the Philippines. For BCU and the CBA, it reaffirms the collective responsibility to champion ethical, innovative, and socially responsive research, ensuring that academic work not only advances knowledge but also contributes meaningfully to sustainable development.
