On November 9, 2024, a spirited judo competition took place at YMCA Baguio, uniting several judo clubs, including the newly formed Baguio Central University Combatives Club-Judo Team, in a remarkable display of skill and sportsmanship. This event, held to support the Batang Pinoy competition, showcased the athletes’ commitment not only to their sport but also to giving back to the community.
The competition featured six talented judokas from Baguio Central University, each bringing their unique strengths and techniques to the mat. From the seniors male division with featherweight category (-55 kg), Mark Jadrick Tamayo earned a silver medal for successfully defeating four other players. Following is half-light weight category (-66 kg) participated by Hendrick Paul Ladyong earning another silver medal. Lastly, the light weight category as represented by Edward Michael Fagyan who unfortunately was eliminated after losing two matches out of ten players.
For the senior female division, the featherweight category (-44 kg) was represented by Zachiah Jane Aspiras earning another silver medal after successfully defeating four other players. Following is half-light weight category (-52 kg) participated by Amie Lerion earning another silver medal. Lastly, Shane Valerie Ibarra, representing the half-middle weight category successfully earned the bronze medal out of five other players.
With a very limited time of training, these student-athletes, with the support from their coach, Ms. Princess Joy Moyaen, and the University Sports Coordinator, Dr. Michelle C. Alumno, successfully earned their very first medals and experienced their very first judo competition.
The event was not just about competition; it aimed to raise awareness and funds for a local charity focused on youth development programs. Spectators and participants alike contributed to the cause, making the event a true community effort.
