Baguio Central University Research and Development Center Leads Transformative Research Symposium at PhilCST

Dr. Michael T. Sebullen the Director for Research, serves as the resource speaker in this symposium

Baguio Central University (BCU), through its Research and Development Center (RDC), reinforced its commitment to advancing research culture and sustainable academic partnerships through participation in the Research Symposium and Workshop hosted by the Philippine College of Science and Technology (PCST) on April 8, 2026, at the institution’s New Audiovisual Room.

The academic event gathered 123 students and faculty members representing six academic programs—College of Education, College of Accountancy and Business Education, College of Computer Studies, College of Maritime Studies, College of Criminal Justice Education, and College of Engineering and Architecture. The symposium carried the theme “Transforming Ideas into Evidence: A Structured Pathway for Student Research Design and Scholarly Writing.”

Serving as the resource speaker was Dr. Michael T. Sebullen, CRS, Director for Research of Baguio Central University, who delivered an in-depth lecture on the fundamentals of research design, scholarly writing, and the process of transforming research ideas into credible and evidence-based academic outputs. His session emphasized the importance of methodological rigor, ethical research practices, and structured inquiry as foundations for producing meaningful and impactful scholarly work.

In his presentation, Dr. Sebullen highlighted the vital role of research in higher education institutions as a mechanism for knowledge generation, innovation, and sustainable development.

Research in universities is not merely an academic requirement. It is a strategic pathway for generating knowledge that informs policies, improves practices, and contributes to the sustainable development of our communities,” he emphasized.

The symposium also served as a continuation of the academic collaboration established through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed in 2024 between Baguio Central University and the Philippine College of Science and Technology. This partnership strengthens faculty mobility, collaborative research engagement, and knowledge exchange between institutions, enabling both universities to share expertise and expand opportunities for interdisciplinary scholarship.

The initiative reflects the proactive leadership of the BCU Research and Development Center in building inter-institutional partnerships that support the university’s research agenda while promoting academic excellence. Through programs such as faculty exchange and research symposia, the RDC continues to provide platforms that cultivate research competencies among faculty and students.

More importantly, the activity contributes to the global development agenda under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, which emphasizes inclusive and equitable quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities. By equipping students and educators with research competencies and fostering academic collaboration, the initiative also supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, highlighting the importance of institutional cooperation in achieving sustainable development outcomes.

The successful conduct of the symposium demonstrates how academic partnerships, research capability building, and knowledge sharing can serve as catalysts for educational transformation and societal progress.

Through the leadership of the Research and Development Center and the continued engagement of partner institutions, Baguio Central University remains steadfast in its mission to strengthen research culture, expand collaborative networks, and contribute to the realization of the SDG 2030 agenda through education and innovation.
