Baguio Central University College of Nursing and School of Midwifery, conducted its annual medical mission on December 19, 2025, at Linuan Elementary School in Linuan, Burgos, La Union. The initiative aimed to bring essential healthcare services closer to a rural community with limited access to medical facilities, while sharing the spirit of compassion and service during the Christmas season.

The activity was made possible through the collaboration of faculty members, Dean Dr. Gina L. Casi, the Student Government Organization (SGO), volunteer nursing students, students taking Nursing Leadership and Management, and local barangay and school officials. Medical consultations were provided by volunteer physician Dr. Soraya Mae Abdul Karim. Nursing students assisted with registration, triage, and vital signs, while faculty members supervised the activities. The SGO facilitated games for children, and Leadership students organized a feeding program.

The mission served 73 beneficiaries, including 29 community members who received medical consultations, diagnosis, and treatment, and 44 students who received Christmas gifts and participated in recreational activities. Common health conditions identified included hypertension and lower respiratory tract infections. Prescribed medications were distributed, and selected patients were referred for further diagnostic testing when necessary.

Despite challenges involving road accessibility, limited supplies, and coordination, the team successfully delivered healthcare services and community assistance. The activity concluded with a message of appreciation from Ma’am Arlene A. Mintas, University Community Extension Coordinator, recognizing the dedication of everyone involved.

The medical mission supports Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by bringing essential healthcare services closer to underserved communities. It also contributes to SDG 2: Zero Hunger, through the feeding program, and SDG 4: Quality Education, through the distribution of school supplies to student beneficiaries. These efforts reflect BCU’s commitment to promoting community well-being through healthcare, nourishment, and educational support.

Hands joined in service as the community members and volunteers unloaded, carried and prepared everything for the day’s activities.
