BCU Magsaysay Campus Joins 1st Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill

By Lara Nicole G. Antonio

Baguio Central University–Magsaysay Campus actively participated in the 1st Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on March 12, 2026, in coordination with the City Government of Baguio. The activity aimed to strengthen disaster preparedness and promote safety awareness among students, faculty, and staff from the College of Criminal Justice Education and the BCU Senior High School.

During the drill, members of the university community participated in a simulated earthquake emergency by practicing the proper “Duck, Cover, and Hold” procedure. This essential safety measure teaches individuals how to protect themselves from falling objects and other potential hazards during an earthquake.

The activity provided an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to become more familiar with the appropriate actions to take when an earthquake occurs. Through active participation, the university community strengthened its understanding of emergency procedures and the importance of remaining calm, alert, and prepared during unexpected disasters.

The National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill is part of broader efforts to improve disaster preparedness and encourage individuals and institutions to develop a culture of safety. By participating in the exercise, BCU–Magsaysay Campus demonstrated its commitment to protecting the welfare of its community and supporting initiatives that promote disaster awareness and emergency readiness.

Beyond practicing earthquake safety procedures, the drill emphasized cooperation, discipline, and shared responsibility in emergency response. Preparedness activities like this help ensure students and personnel understand their roles in minimizing risk and protecting lives during disasters.

This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, particularly the goal of reducing the adverse effects of disasters and strengthening community resilience. It also aligns with SDG 13: Climate Action, which promotes improved education, awareness, and institutional capacity for disaster risk reduction and adaptation to natural hazards. Through its participation in the NSED, BCU–Magsaysay Campus continues to promote a safer, more prepared, and more resilient academic community.
