The position of a College Dean is more than a title or an administrative responsibility. It is a commitment to lead, inspire, guide, and serve the academic community. Behind the title are years of dedication, countless decisions, difficult challenges, and meaningful experiences that shape not only the institution but also the person entrusted with its leadership.
My journey as a Dean of the College of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (CTELA) at Baguio Central University has been a journey of learning, perseverance, and service. Over the years, I have come to understand that effective leadership is not measured solely by accomplishments, awards, or institutional recognition. Rather, it is reflected in the lives touched, the colleagues encouraged, the students guided, and the positive changes made within the academic community.
One of the most significant experiences in deanship is the responsibility of balancing the different needs and expectations of students, faculty members, administrators, and other stakeholders. A Dean must make decisions that promote academic excellence while ensuring fairness, accountability, and respect for everyone. There are times when decisions are difficult, problems seem overwhelming, and expectations are demanding. Yet, these challenges provide opportunities to develop patience, strengthen judgment, and practice responsible leadership.
Leading a college also requires collaboration. No Dean can accomplish institutional goals alone. The commitment and cooperation of faculty members, program coordinators, staff, and university officials are essential in achieving shared objectives. Through teamwork, open communication, and mutual respect, challenges can become opportunities for improvement. These experiences have reinforced my belief that leadership is not about exercising authority but about empowering others to contribute their talents and abilities toward a common vision.
Another important aspect of deanship is the continuous pursuit of quality education. Academic programs must remain responsive to changing educational needs, quality assurance standards, accreditation requirements, and the expectations of the community. These responsibilities demand careful planning, consistent monitoring, and a willingness to embrace innovation. For a College of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts, the mission is especially meaningful because the college prepares future teachers and professionals who will influence the lives of others. Every improvement in the college contributes to the development of competent, responsible, and compassionate individuals.
The journey, however, is not without personal sacrifices. Administrative responsibilities require time, energy, emotional strength, and dedication. There are moments of disappointment, misunderstanding, and uncertainty. Nevertheless, these experiences become valuable lessons in resilience and professionalism. They remind a Dean that leadership requires not only competence but also humility, integrity, courage, and a genuine concern for others.
Retirement may mark the end of one chapter, but it does not necessarily signify the end of one’s capacity to serve. Being given another opportunity to serve CTELA has allowed me to appreciate leadership from a renewed perspective. Returning to the academic community is a reminder that experience remains valuable and that the desire to contribute to institutional growth can continue beyond the usual boundaries of a professional career.
As I continue this journey, I recognize that the role of a Dean is not simply to manage programs, implement policies, or accomplish administrative tasks. It is also to preserve the values of the institution, inspire colleagues, support students, and help build a community where teaching, learning, and professional growth can flourish.
Looking back, I realize that the true rewards of deanship are not found in the title itself but in the opportunities it provides to make a difference. Every challenge has offered a lesson, every success has been a shared achievement, and every experience has contributed to a deeper understanding of leadership and service.
Ultimately, beyond the title is a commitment to people, a responsibility to the institution, and a continuing passion for education. The journey of a Dean is never defined solely by the years spent in office but by the values upheld, the lives influenced, and the legacy of service left behind.
For me, deanship is more than a position. It is a calling to lead with purpose, serve with humility, and continue making a meaningful contribution to the future of education.
