Baguio Central University-College of Nursing and School of Midwifery strengthened its commitment to nursing education not just in the academe but in the community and clinical settings by successfully conducting an orientation for the level 2 midwifery and nursing students at WEMS Hall on September 18, 2026. Dr. Sonia W. Insas and Mr. Rommel De Guzman of the Baguio City Health Services Office conducted the orientation in the morning for the Community Health Nursing (CHN), while Ms. Sandra B. Sagubo, chief nurse of the Cordillera Hospital of the Divine Grace (CHDG), conducted the orientation in the afternoon. The activity emphasized the importance of preparing future healthcare professionals to understand community health needs, embrace professional responsibility, and contribute meaningfully to the well-being of the people they will serve.
The orientation provided students with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of community health nursing, community engagement, and the responsibilities associated with their future roles in healthcare. It highlighted the importance of connecting classroom learning with practical healthcare experiences, enabling students to appreciate how nursing and midwifery contribute to health promotion, disease prevention, and the delivery of quality care in diverse community settings.
Beyond academic preparation, the activity fostered an environment for building connections, strengthening teamwork, and developing a shared commitment to compassionate and responsible healthcare service. By introducing students to the relevance of CHN and hospital exposures in their educational journey, BCU reinforced the value of collaboration, professional readiness, and community and clinical involvement as essential components of nursing and midwifery education.
The successful conduct of the orientation marked a meaningful step in preparing students for the learning opportunities and responsibilities that await them beyond the classroom. The knowledge and perspectives gained from the activity can serve as a foundation for their subsequent academic work, clinical exposure, and community-based learning experiences. Through initiatives that promote practical understanding and service-oriented values, BCU continues to support the development of competent, compassionate, and socially responsible healthcare professionals.
This initiative also reflects the university’s contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by supporting the preparation of future healthcare professionals who can help promote healthier communities and contribute to improved health outcomes. It further relates to SDG 4: Quality Education, through its emphasis on meaningful learning and professional development, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by recognizing the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in advancing healthcare education and community service.
