On April 4, 2026, a seminar on Suicide Prevention was conducted at Purok 27, Irisan Barangay, Baguio City, with parents in the community as the primary participants. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about suicide prevention, promote mental health awareness, and equip parents with the knowledge and understanding needed to recognize emotional distress among their children and family members.
Serving as the resource speaker, I emphasized the important role of parents in providing a safe, caring, and supportive home environment. The discussion highlighted the importance of open communication, active listening, empathy, and understanding, particularly when children experience emotional struggles, stress, or personal difficulties.
The seminar also emphasized the importance of recognizing possible warning signs of suicide, responding to individuals who may be experiencing emotional distress with compassion rather than judgment, and seeking professional help when necessary. Parents were encouraged to create an environment where children feel safe expressing their feelings and concerns without fear of rejection or criticism.
Through this activity, the participants were reminded that suicide prevention is a shared responsibility that begins with awareness, understanding, and genuine concern for one another. A simple conversation, a listening ear, and an expression of care can make a meaningful difference in the life of someone who is struggling.
The seminar served as an opportunity to strengthen the role of parents as the first line of support for their children and to encourage a community that values mental health, compassion, and hope.
Ultimately, the activity reinforced the message that every life matter, every person deserves to be heard, and no one should have to face emotional struggles alone. Through continued education and community involvement, families can help build a more caring, supportive, and mentally healthy community.
The seminar supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals) by promoting mental health awareness, educating parents on suicide prevention, and strengthening collaboration among families and community members to create a safe, caring, and supportive environment for everyone.
