Baguio Central University (BCU), through its College of Nursing and School of Midwifery, conducted an orientation program for Level II Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BSM) students on September 12, 2025, at the DMJF (Dr. Margarita J. Fernandez) Hall, BCU Main Building. The activity aimed to prepare students for their academic and clinical learning experiences by introducing essential concepts in Community Health Nursing Primary Health Care and providing relevant information about their clinical exposure. The orientation served as an opportunity to strengthen students’ understanding of their responsibilities and expectations as future healthcare professionals.
The morning session featured Dr. Sonia Insas and Ms. Imelda Pugoy, who oriented the students on Community. The session emphasized the importance of understanding healthcare needs within communities and recognizing the role of healthcare professionals in promoting health and preventing disease. Through this orientation, students were introduced to the significance of community-based healthcare and the responsibilities involved in delivering health services to individuals, families, and communities.
In the afternoon, the students participated in another orientation facilitated by Ms. Sandra Sagubo of CHDG (Cordillera Hospital of the Divine Grace). This session provided an opportunity to discuss clinical learning and the importance of preparing students for hospital setting. The participation of a representative from the hospital highlighted the value of collaboration between academic institutions and healthcare facilities in supporting nursing and midwifery education.
The orientation reflected BCU’s commitment to preparing students for the demands of healthcare practice through structured academic guidance and exposure to community and clinical health concepts. By providing students with foundational information before their subsequent learning activities, the program helped establish a clearer understanding of the knowledge, responsibilities, and professional conduct expected of future nurses and midwives. It also underscored the importance of coordination among faculty members, students, and healthcare partners in developing competent and responsible healthcare practitioners.
The activity aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by supporting students’ professional learning and preparation for healthcare practice. It also contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, as Community Health Nursing and Primary Health Care education helps prepare future nurses and midwives to promote health and contribute to disease prevention. Furthermore, SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals is relevant because collaboration between BCU and Cordillera Hospital of the Divine Grace supports educational engagement between academic and healthcare institutions.
Through this orientation program, Baguio Central University reaffirmed its commitment to providing nursing and midwifery students with a strong educational foundation for their future professional responsibilities. By integrating community health concepts with clinical orientation, the university continues to support the development of knowledgeable, compassionate, and service-oriented healthcare professionals dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the communities they will serve.
