Baguio Central University (BCU) achieved recognition in the field of structural engineering as its Civil Engineering team secured 4th Place in The First National Undergraduate Seismic Design Challenge 2026: Beat the Quake – Regional Qualifiers, held on January 23, 2026, at Newtown Plaza Hotel, Baguio City.
Organized by the Junior Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) – Baguio Central University Student Chapter, the team’s participation featured Mr. Mark C. Epad, Mr. Janray K. Agaton, and Mr. Clifford A. Caluscos, under the guidance of Engr. John Danes Rullan. The competition brought together Civil Engineering students from various institutions to demonstrate their technical knowledge and skills in seismic design and structural engineering.
Throughout the challenge, participants applied engineering principles, explored innovative solutions, and demonstrated teamwork while addressing problems related to earthquake-resistant structural design. The competition provided an opportunity for students to apply classroom knowledge to practical engineering challenges and strengthen their critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Securing fourth place marked a significant achievement for the BCU team, reflecting the members’ dedication, technical competence, and commitment to engineering excellence. More importantly, the result qualified the team to advance to the national level of the competition, allowing them to represent BCU in the next stage.
The team’s accomplishment highlights the importance of experiential learning and student participation in academic competitions. Through the support of their adviser and the PICE–BCU Student Chapter, the participants gained valuable experience that contributes to their continued academic and professional development.
SDG 4: Quality Education — Target 4.4. This target focuses on increasing the number of youth and adults with relevant technical and professional skills for employment and decent work. The competition supported this goal by providing Civil Engineering students with practical opportunities to apply structural engineering concepts, develop innovative solutions, and strengthen technical competencies relevant to their future careers.
