Learning Through Movement and Collaboration: EDUC 4 Explores Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences

Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences

The EDUC 4 – Foundations of Special and Inclusive Education class engaged in an interactive learning activity designed to explore Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, highlighting the importance of recognizing and valuing the diverse abilities of learners.

One of the featured activities focused on spatial intelligence, which involves the ability to visualize, remember, and mentally manipulate objects, positions, and spatial relationships. The class was divided into two groups for a fun and challenging memory game. The first group formed a specific arrangement of poses, while the second group carefully observed and memorized the positions of their classmates. After the second group left the room, the first group rearranged themselves. The challenge was for the observing group to return and restore the original arrangement as accurately as possible using their visual memory and spatial awareness.

Beyond the excitement and teamwork, the activity demonstrated how learning can be made meaningful through movement, observation, memory, and active participation. It also encouraged students to appreciate that individuals possess different strengths and ways of processing information—an essential consideration in creating inclusive and responsive learning environments.

The activity supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): Quality Education, particularly the goal of promoting inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. By integrating experiential and collaborative learning into teacher education, future educators are encouraged to develop creative teaching strategies that recognize learner diversity and provide opportunities for every student to participate, contribute, and succeed.

Through activities like this, EDUC 4 emphasizes that effective education goes beyond traditional instruction. It involves understanding learners, discovering their strengths, and creating learning experiences where differences are valued and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
